ElfQuest #2 (of 32)
Journey to Sorrow's End
September 30th, 1985
As the tribe approaches the throne-room of Greymung the Shiftless we "meet" all 17 members of the tribe (though not the 14 wolves).
After meeting with Greymung the WolfRiders prepare for council, Greymung strikes Skywise because of this fascination with the large magnet Greymung has been using as a footstool; apparently the stone is "sacred" and fell from the sky. In lieu of gutting Greymung, Cutter uses the pommel of New Moon to break off a chunk of the rock, gifting Skywise with his own lodestone.
Next Greymung instructs Picknose to escort the WolfRiders to the Tunnel of Golden Light, assuring the elves that if his kind could handle sunlight, they'd love the land at the end of the tunnel. Assuming that Greymung wouldn't betray them since this is a good way to get them out of his caverns, the WolfRiders go excitedly. The journey takes a couple of days, but when they get there and investigate the source of the Golden Light, Picknose escapes Treestump, who was set to guard him, and causes the tunnel to collapse, stranding the night-dwelling elves in a desert the likes of which they'd never imagined.
As they contemplate their doom, the "secret" of the lodestone (its' compass-like property) is discovered. Now that they will be able to tell direction, they decide to follow Skywise's lodestone into the burning waste. On the second night, Redlance, still wounded grievously from his encounter with the humans, falls; Nightfall stays with her lovemate. The next night, they arrive at the foothills, and after an encounter with a cactus, discover the moisture-storing capability of these "prickly" plants.
Skywise contemplates his sunburn and Cutter goes in search of better sustenance and shelter for his tribe and ♦calls♦ Skywise to see something amazing. An elfin village...
[we see the village, but no individuals in this issue...]
